On February 3, 2000, in Anchorage, Alaska, the Division of Elections certified a ballot initiative entitled "An Act to Re-legalize Hemp"' for the November 2000, election.

Alaskan citizens will have the opportunity in November to be the first state in the United States to vote for the full re-legalization of the hemp plant and all its uses.

The Act provides for amnesty for all persons convicted of a marijuana offense, sets up a committee to study possible restitution, and absolves all persons 18 years old and older from all civil and criminal penalties for possession and use of marijuana. To find out more about this historical event you can check with HEMP2000 on their web page:

You can download a copy of the act itself, the summary language, and find out how to contact the supporters of the ballot measure.

The supporters at HEMP2000 are totally unfunded volunteers that are long time residents of Alaska, struggling to reach as many people as they can to encourage a yes vote in November. They can use all the help they can get.

If the Alaska ballot initiative, proposition 5, passes on November 7, 2000, it will start the trend in the United States to release those non-violent prisoners convicted of drug offenses. This ballot initiative can replicate all across the United States, with support from those who want to see it succeed. HEMP2000 is working to free them all, and can use your help.
